Right now, nearly 40% of private-sector workers, and 81% of those in the lowest wage jobs, do not have the ability to earn paid sick time. In fact, nearly one quarter of adults in the US have lost a job or been threatened with job loss for taking time off when sick. It should come as no surprise that in a recent Orlando Sentinel survey, a whopping 88% of respondents said they supported businesses providing paid sick time.
Orange County is poised to become the first county in Florida to provide Earned Sick Time for employees. The deadline to gather enough signatures in order to make November’s ballot is coming fast. After losing critical signature gathering time because of Tropical Storm Debby, we’ve reached an ‘all hands on deck’ moment for Orange County’s Earned Sick Time campaign.
