This past weekend, the Florida AFL-CIO kicked off the largest ALL-volunteer based electoral program in the state to prove again that passionate volunteers are the key to victory in November. On the heels of two consecutive party convention weeks, hundreds of workers in every trade from across Florida, union and non-union, talked with hundreds of their neighbors at their doors and on the phone.
Nearly 200 Labor leaders, retirees, union members and their families came together in Orlando and South Florida to learn about commonsense economics and what is at stake in this election cycle for working families. Executive Vice-President of the AFL-CIO Tefere Gebre and President of the Florida AFL-CIO Mike Williams along with other Labor leaders shared their thoughts on economy that works for all workers and inspired the attendees to commit themselves to reaching as many Florida voters as possible with their message of shared prosperity.
Unions are known for their grassroots electoral efforts and this year is no different. Florida Labor will maximize its nearly 2 percentage point overall impact by mobilizing its over one million members, retirees and their families in the state to vote and to spread the word. Working people are commitment to stand together to rewrite the economic rules so that all Americans can get ahead and stay ahead. This massive, all-volunteer undertaking represents the best of democracy, in one of the most important battleground states in the country. The real impassioned conversations at doors, on phones, in the workplace and in neighborhoods are key to sharing their vision of an economy that works for all workers, not just corporations.
“Working families are an unstoppable force when we stick together,” said AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka. “We spoke loud and strong and have helped put the country on a path to shared prosperity. We have driven the debate that put the brakes on the TPP and have established the standard for rewriting the economic rules that will shape this election.”
